Building Water Secure Gram Panchayats

The “Building Water Secure Gram Panchayats” project aims to strengthen water security and climate resilience in four Gram Panchayats of Mayurbhanj district. Through community-led water resource management, watershed development, groundwater conservation, sanitation, livelihood enhancement, and institutional strengthening, the project seeks to improve access to water for domestic and productive use while promoting sustainable and resilient rural livelihoods.

The project aims to strengthen community-led water security, improve access to water, sanitation and hygiene, and enhance sustainable livelihoods through integrated natural resource management.

ACTIVITIES

  • Conduct village and Gram Panchayat baseline assessments and prepare Village Prosperity and Resilience Plans (VPRPs).
  • Form and strengthen Gram Panchayat Coordination Committees (GPCCs), Village Development Committees (VDCs), and other community institutions.
  • Build the capacities of VDCs, GPCCs, women leaders, youth, and community volunteers through training and fellowship programmes.
  • Facilitate access to social protection schemes and strengthen convergence with government programmes for community development.
  • Promote participation of children and adolescents through village-level platforms and engagement activities.
  • Prepare water inventories, aquifer maps, water passbooks, and Gram Panchayat Water Security Plans to strengthen local water governance.
  • Implement land and water conservation measures, groundwater recharge interventions, and water harvesting structures to improve water security.
  • Install weather stations and implement the Jal Bandhu Fellowship to strengthen climate-informed water resource management.
  • Improve village water supply systems, household sanitation, greywater management, solid and liquid waste management, and hygiene and nutrition practices.
  • Strengthen Farmer Producer Groups, promote climate-resilient agriculture, improve irrigation infrastructure, support micro-enterprises, and provide weather-based agro-advisory services to enhance livelihoods.
