Water Secure Initiative in Chandaka, Bhubaneswar
The “Water Secure Initiative in Chandaka, Bhubaneswar” project supports 1933 individuals from 384 households across 10 villages in four Gram Panchayats of Khordha district. The initiative focuses on strengthening community-led environmental conservation, water and land management, improved WASH practices, and sustainable water use to enhance hygiene, nutrition, and overall health outcomes.
The project aims to strengthen community-led water security, sanitation, and climate-resilient natural resource management in forest-fringe villages of the Chandaka forest area.

ACTIVITIES
- Prepare and update Village Prosperity and Resilience Plans (VPRPs) for water security, WASH, and livelihood improvement in all 10 villages.
- Build capacity of Village Development Committees (VDCs) on leadership, governance, natural resource management, WASH, and nutrition.
- Facilitate convergence meetings between communities, PRIs, and government departments for linking village needs with schemes and programmes.
- Strengthen women-led institutions and SHGs for socio-economic and community development.
- Create platforms for children and adolescents to promote participation, healthy practices, and confidence building.
- Organise Gram Panchayat-level workshops to improve access to social protection schemes for eligible households.
- Prepare village-level water security plans through collaboration with government departments and development partners.
- Construct community-managed piped water supply systems with household and public institution water access.
- Implement land and water development activities through source-shed treatment and agroforestry plantations.
- Construct and renovate water harvesting structures, ponds, and dug wells for community and ecological needs.
- Build capacity of PRI members and stakeholders on groundwater management, water conservation, and ethical water use.
- Establish community-managed water quality monitoring and testing systems using Field Test Kits (FTKs).
- Promote improved WASH and nutrition practices through community awareness and behaviour change sessions.
- Develop local youth cadres like Jala Bandhu and Poshan Mitra as community resource persons for water, WASH, and institution strengthening.
